Hand spinner and textile artist SWhittle works primarily with raw fibers to create touchable pieces of art. Using traditional spinning, weaving and basketry techniques with modern materials infuses new energy into ancient methods. The pieces, whether jewelry or non functioning art, are all excitingly tactile and beg to be touched. The pieces juxtapose the shiny cool feel of wires with the matte warmth of fibres as they play on the mysterious way light is reflected and absorbed. The quest for simplicity and elegance of form begins in the fibre selection itself. Its layers of colours create a feeling of depth, which must find a balance between pattern and movement. The variety of fibres available and the richness of their colours make it the perfect material to experiment and work with. This medium is positively inspiring.
